Oulton Chapel & Burial Ground
Oulton Burial Ground, located within the grounds of the historic Oulton Chapel in North Norfolk, is a joint project between Historic Norfolk and Ivan Fisher Independent Funeral Homes. This secluded space, modest in size and bordered by natural landscaping and native wildlife, has been reserved for green burials where people are laid to rest in a natural way causing as little impact on the environment as possible. Oulton Burial Ground is truly in a place of spiritual and natural beauty, providing a tranquil and intimate setting in the heart of the North Norfolk countryside, nestled under big Norfolk skies.
About Us
Established in 1977, Historic Norfolk has been instrumental in saving more than 20 historic buildings across Norfolk that might otherwise have been lost. Entirely self-financing and largely run by volunteers, the Trust’s mission is the conservation and promotion of Norfolk’s built heritage. Oulton Chapel is a non-conformist Chapel was built between 1728-31 and is listed grade II*. It retains its panelling, box pews and gallery which ruled out any re-use involving alteration to the interior. The Chapel became disused in the 1960s and its condition deteriorated. Limited emergency repairs were carried out in 1984 with support from the Norfolk Churches Trust and Broadland District Council. In 1988 Norfolk County Council drew up a detailed schedule of repairs. Following this, the Trust purchased the Chapel and surrounding land from the owners, the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches Ltd. Repairs to the Chapel were completed in 1991 with grants from English Heritage and Broadland District Council. These included the conversion of the rear vestry into a small meeting room with a fully equipped kitchen, and toilets. In 2017, the trust partnered with local funeral directors Ivan Fisher Independent Funeral Home with a view to opening Oulton Burial Ground. After years of careful planning, the new burial ground opened in 2023.

Oulton Cremation Service
For many, the idea of having a funeral service take place at a traditional crematorium is a daunting prospect. As an alternative, we can offer families the opportunity to have the funeral service take place at Oulton Chapel. At the close of the funeral service, instead of the curtains drawing around the coffin, mourners will have the opportunity to say their own private farewell and the coffin will remain in place in the chapel. When the mourners have left the chapel, our team will transport the coffin to a local crematorium in Norfolk where a private cremation will then take place. Your loved ones cremated remains will then be returned to Ivan Fisher Independent Funeral Home in Aylsham where they can be collected by either you or your funeral director, or we can arrange for them to be interred into Oulton Burial Ground.
